Until now, Memhert Ts'gie Mariam has striven to finance the necessary research and writing herself - writing whenever she can between projects. After she completed the first draft of the first volume, she decided to give it to the priesthood of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to make sure that her religious books were in accord with the teachings of the Church. All of the priests and church scholars who read the book enthusiastically encouraged her and told that her writing was blessed and greatly needed. She was then asked to begin teaching at her home church in the Washington D.C. area where she was given the title “Memhert” after her teaching was well received by the priests and the students. She had resisted the offer to teach for over a year, concerned that the temptation of vanity that comes from being known by many people might impede her spiritual growth and development. She prefers to keep to herself when she is not meeting to have meaningful dialogue with others. “Memhert” means teacher/scholar and is an esteemed title within our church tradition. Unfortunately, her home church was unable to financially support her teaching and work, because leaking ceilings in the old church building made a new church building the priority for the church funds.
Her students, friends and family insisted that she continue to write and share the knowledge that she has shared with them with more people on a larger platform. A friend from the Church conceptualized this website and others have made amazing and loving contributions of time and finances to making the project a reality. These fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters have assured her that if she made her desires known to the community at large, she would find many more willing to support her bold endeavor. She has already financed and completed much of the necessary research herself over the years and is eager to share her historic discoveries with you. Memhert Ts'gie Mariam is grateful for any contribution that you can make not matter how small. We also have an interactive blog where we would like to begin open discussion on the subject matter, led by your interests and concerns.
Because Memhert Ts'gie Mariam believes is transparency and accountability at all stages of this exciting project and journey, she has integrated a Podcast that will broadcast key milestones in the full realization of the project from the illustration of the books with the holy monks in the monasteries to the final publishing at the end of the year.
In the first phase, we are raising money to complete the illustration of the first series with the holy church painters in the monasteries of Ethiopia. We will need to travel there and support them with the tools and sustenance that they need, at least for the period of their work. For The Big Kush Book we would like to revisit some of the sites mentioned in the books in Africa – Ethiopia in order to include pictures of sites, artifacts and illustrations that have never been made public in a large forum. We will also finance the publishing of the books in hard copy with a company that has offered us a phenomenal distribution package. This process will allow for the subsequent publishing of all of the books in the first series and the initial three remaining books. It is our hope that we can convince her to right a biography once she has completed these books that she is committed to see on the market before hand.
Again, we are grateful to any contribution that you can make and we hope that you will remain a member of the Kush Books community and stay with us on our journey to serve the Truth.
